Setup

The first step in amplifying the right stuff is setting up social media accounts if you don't already have them. Having an active Twitter, Facebook or Instagram account does not mean hours lost every day. The goal is amplifying our own voices and not the other side. We will appeal to cognitive bias, we might educate but we will never change minds on social media.

One thing you'll want to have ready is a profile image for your account. Accounts with no image get tossed into the category of troll accounts. This does not have to be an image of yourself, it can be your favorite flower, resistance symbol, dog or cat. Or it can be a picture of you.

Have a photo handy as you get ready to setup your account.

To create a Facebook account, go to Facebook.com. If you already have an account, but it's inactive you can click the "Login" option at the top of the page and then click "Forgot account?" You will be prompted to enter an email address or phone number associated with the account.

If you want to create a new account, then fill out the "Create a New Account" form on Facebook.com.  The data that they is required is First Name, Last Name, Mobile Number OR Email and Password. Then enter your Birthday and Gender. You will be sent a verification code to the phone or email that you entered, and you will then need to enter that verification code on Facebook.com.  Once you have verified your account, you will be promoted to upload (or take) your profile picture.

Once you have setup your account, you can go ahead and search by name for people who you want to "Friend" on Facebook.

Creating a Twitter account is a similar process, and you will need to enter a name, a phone number or email address and birthdate. The name you enter will be your Twitter account name. You will be prompted to indicate whether you wish to have personalized ads from Twitter - you can always change your selection later.

You will be sent a verification code which you need to enter in order to finalize the account setup. The final steps include creating your account password, uploading an image and entering a short bio (optional). Finally, Twitter will prompt you to identify topics that are of interest to you, and then display accounts that you can follow. The accounts will be based on the topics of interest that you identified.

When you open the app, you will be prompted to Sign-up (on Android) or Create Account (on iPhone). Sign-up using your phone number or email. Once this is verified, you will be prompted to create a username and password to complete the process.

If you have already created a Facebook account (see above), you can login to Instagram through Facebook.
